Ping Pong (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 12 certificate
Director Hugh Hartford's documentary charts the progress of some of the competitors in the Over 80s category at the 2010 World Table Tennis Championships. Hartford's inspiring film amply demonstrates that youth and vigour really can be just a frame of mind; and that it's not just athletes 50 or 60 years the junior of these players who have a steely determination. While it's not surprising that the gerontic players are, in the main, people who've long been involved in competitive sport, among their ranks is Ursula, a German who only started in her 80s, using the game as therapy to recover from a stroke. Flying the flag for Britain are Les and Terry, who are both fighting off illness as well as the other players; Australia's representative is the 100-year-old Dorothy, whose nemesis may turn out to be Texan Lisa. Hartford's film captures all the sporting glories, disappointments and underhand tactics employed during the event in Inner Mongolia. Film4 premiere.
Director: Sori Fumihiko

The Comedian (Film) Film icon 15 certificate
Tom Shkolnik's debut feature film is an intimate drama about an aspiring comedian struggling for a sense of identity in contemporary London. Thirtysomething Ed is a reluctant salesman by day, and hasn't managed to make much of an impression on the amateur stand-up circuit by night. After a chance encounter on a bus, Ed begins an affair with artist Nathan but he's also drawn to French musician Elisa. It's Ed's failure to choose a path and commit to it that provides the film's dramatic engine, and Shkolnik's low-fi improvisational style nicely captures the London lifestyles of these drifting souls.
Director: Tom Shkolnik
Starring: Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Edward Hogg, Steven Robertson, Brett Goldstein, Gerard Murphy, Elisa Lasowski
(Widescreen, Subtitles, 2012, 15, 2 Star)

The King of Pigs (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 15 certificate
Korean director Yeon Sang-ho's debut animation examines bullying within Korea's social hierarchies; a world away from the visual style of Japan's Studio Ghibli, it has the feel of a collaboration between Quentin Tarantino and the makers of King of the Hill. Erupting with brutal violence from the outset, The King of Pigs lets us in to the lives of Kyung-min and Jong-Suk. Both now struggling to make their way in the worlds of business and literature, they meet up to discuss their childhood. At school, the pair were designated members of a nerdy underclass called the 'pigs' and relentlessly, viciously picked upon by a clique of tormentors known as the 'dogs'. Salvation, or at least survival, for the 'pigs' came in the form of the worryingly troubled, extremely bellicose Chul, a former classmate who, despite having dropped out of school, takes cruel satisfaction in gorily avenging the 'dogs' misdeeds.
Director: Sang-ho Yeon
Starring: Ik-Joon Yang, Jeong-se Oh, Hye-na Kim, Kkobbi Kim, Hee-von Park

Waste Land (Documentary) PG certificate
British film-maker Lucy Walker's Oscar-nominated documentary centres upon Rio de Janeiro's extremely euphemistically named Jardim Gramacho - which in reality is a vast rubbish dump. She follows Brazilian-born, New York-based artist Vik Muniz as the sculptor-turned-photographer works on a project to document some of the thousands of people who scavenge recyclables - and even their meals - from the massive tip. His aim is not only to photograph the men and women known locally as catadores but also to create large collage versions of his prints, using items they have recovered - and then to sell the resultant artworks to fund organisations that help these impoverished workers.

When US President Merkin meets with his advisors, not only does he have to contend with super-hawk General Buck Turgidson, who sees the situation as an opportunity to do something about Communism in general, but he also learns that the Soviets already have a Doomsday Machine in place, which will destroy all plant and animal life on Earth should the USSR be attacked. Step Up 3 (Film) Film icon 12 certificate
Rick Malambri, Adam G Sevani and Sharni Vinson star in this dance spectacular. A crew of New York street dancers must win the top prize in a competition or face losing the building where they live and try out their new choreography routines. Along the way, the plot encompasses love stories and even a police chase, but of course it's really all about the dancing - which bursts forth in abundance and enough variety to please any hoofing fan. Indeed, the coruscating dance routines, from a cast composed largely of professional dancers rather than actors, is undoubtedly the film's main strength. Edited for content.
Director: Jon Chu
Starring: Rick Malambri, Adam G. Sevani, Sharni Vinson, Alyson Stoner, Keith Stallworth, Kendra Andrews

Jesse Eisenberg stars in this highly acclaimed and Oscar-winning fictionalised telling of the tetchy story behind Facebook's birth. 'You don't get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies' stated the movie's poster, and so it's appropriate that this gripping drama kicks off with neurotic Harvard computer science student Mark Zuckerberg drunkenly creating a misogynistic website called Facemash in revenge for being dumped by his girlfriend Erica.

Mark Wahlberg stars in David O Russell's Oscar-winning biopic of the American welterweight boxer Micky Ward. Ward grew up in the supremely tough working-class neighbourhood of Lowell, Massachusetts, and, in the 90s, aimed for the classic escape from that environment - via boxing. Indeed, his brother Dicky Eklund once showed promise in the sport - but that was a decade ago, before he succumbed to drug addiction. Now the elder sibling is Micky's coach and, keeping it in the family, his ferocious mother Alice is acting as his manager. But do either of his 'support staff' have what it takes to unlock his full potential? Ward's girlfriend Charlene thinks not and is agitating for change. Will the good-natured pugilist put ambition before blood loyalty? Bale and Leo both picked up Academy Awards for their supporting roles in the drama. Grave of the Fireflies (Film) Film icon 4 star rating 12 certificate
From Japan's Studio Ghibli, Isao Takahata's moving film looks at the effect of American attacks on the Japanese civilian population during the Second World War. The film opens on the day of Japan's surrender, as a young boy, Seita, dies alone. Then, in flashback, the film reveals the death of his mother from burns inflicted in a bombing raid; his attempts to look after his younger sister Setsuko, and their struggle against hunger; the increasing attacks by the Americans; and the abandonment of compassion and caring by the rest of society. An openly anti-war film, it shows that the suffering of the innocents in war affects both the victors and the losers.

Howl's Moving Castle (Film) Film icon 4 star rating U certificate
Hayao Miyazaki's Oscar-nominated follow-up to the acclaimed Spirited Away is a beguiling fantasy about love, transformation and self-acceptance. In a village in a war-torn land, a shy teenager called Sophie works in a hat shop and lives in the shadow of her glamorous sister Lettie, until she encounters the infamous wizard Howl. The meeting incites the jealousy of the Witch of the Waste, who transforms Sophie into a wizened old lady. Sophie's subsequent quest to lift the curse brings her firmly into Howl's world. Miyazaki paints her journey with characteristic vigour and ingenuity, gleefully exploiting a steampunk aesthetic which has its greatest iteration in the castle of the title: a bloated Gothic mansion that heaves itself along on four spindly legs to an accompaniment of groans and wheezes. This screening is of the English-dubbed version of the film, which includes impressive vocal performances from a cast including Christian Bale, Lauren Bacall, Jean Simmons and Billy Crystal.
Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Starring: Chieko Baisho, Takuya Kimura, Akihiro Miwa, Tatsuya Gashuin, Ryunosuke Kamiki, Mitsunori Isaki

And it's not just his own life he must worry about: he picks up an initially unwilling accomplice along the way, and must also find a way to persuade the authorities that he's not a turncoat and that they must act upon the information he has discovered.

She is promised to Cal Hockley in a loveless match but quickly falls for Jack. The first half of the film establishes their story, the second the fate of the Titanic once it has struck the iceberg. Can passenger Ted Striker overcome the traumas he suffered as a wartime pilot and land the plane with the help of his ex-girlfriend, stewardess Elaine or are they all doomed? Star Trek (Film) Film icon 4 star rating 12 certificate
JJ Abrams' sci-fi adventure prequel, starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, uses the twin devices of a parallel timeline and time travel to boldly move the franchise where it had never gone before. In order to foil a Romulan attack, George Kirk sacrifices himself, having first arranged for an escape pod to take his pregnant wife to safety. Around 20 years later, the young tearaway James T Kirk is encouraged to join the Starfleet Academy by Captain Pike. An equally youthful Spock has also recently thrown in his lot with humankind and with Starfleet, having had enough of the Vulcan racism directed at him due to his half-human parentage. The two recruits instantly clash. But they must overcome their differences if they are to survive a vengeful visitor from the future, who's determined to make Spock pay for his part in an atrocity that's yet to be committed... Joy Ride (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 15 certificate
John Dahl's chiller stars Steve Zahn and Paul Walker as Fuller Thomas and his brother Lewis who, along with Lewis's friend from college, Venna, decide to drive across the States as part of their vacation. To lighten up the trip, they buy an old CB radio and start talking to truckers, eventually winding them up with jokes and tricks. But they go too far, and find that one trucker, who goes by the handle of Rusty Nail, is out for their blood - and he knows the dusty back roads far, far better than they do... Inevitably compared to Spielberg's Duel, Joy Ride is just as tense and scary, but very, very different, with a white knuckle night chase through a cornfield one of the highlights.
Director: John Dahl
Starring: Steve Zahn, Paul Walker, Leelee Sobieski, Jessica Bowman, Stuart Stone, Basil Wallace

Berberian Sound Studio (Film) Film icon 15 certificate
Toby Jones stars in director Peter Strickland's remarkable psychological horror film, which offers a truly disturbing cinematic experience despite its near-absolute lack of standard horror visuals. The narrative centres on the reserved, well-mannered Gilderoy, a gifted sound engineer from Surrey, whose expertise at recording and creating innovative sound effects sees him hired by an Italian film studio. But this is the 1970s and his new employers specialise in the ultra-low budget, ultra-violent and exploitative films of the country's burgeoning giallo horror movement.

But then one of the bored, put-upon crew decides to go and feed the pet alien they picked up along the way - and inadvertently sets them all on a potentially disastrous course. A mildly scary, very funny fantasy-horror that perfectly exploits the legends of its Nordic setting. Three film students set out to document a curious case of illegal bear-poaching. The youthful trio - excitable Thomas, grounded Johanna and their sardonic cameraman Kalle - quickly establish the man they need to interview is the dour and evasive Hans. But, despite the older man's gruff refusal to help, the trio follow him on one of his night-time forays into the pine forest, where they discover that Hans is after bigger, far more terrifying and deadly prey than bears. Suddenly they learn that their folklore is a shocking reality, and that the government is hiding a terrible truth from the populace. But, rather than fleeing the danger, the three beg Hans to let them continue filming.

Sightseers (Film) Film icon 4 star rating 15 certificate
Alice Lowe and Steve Oram teamed up to write and star in this dark and violent comedy-drama, directed by Ben Wheatley. They look such an ordinary couple, but these Midlands' lovebirds prove anything but. Chris is the proud owner of an Abbey Oxford caravan and adores few things more than exploring the glories of the British countryside. So, when presented with the opportunity to whisk his new girlfriend, Tina, off to see such heady sights as Keswick's Pencil Museum, Crich Tramway Village and the Ribblehead Viaduct, he jumps at it. Though, to be honest, the sheltered Tina seems keener on the journey's erotic possibilities. And, from then on, only the exceedingly unwise do anything to cross the increasingly malevolent pair.

Joyeux Noël (Film) Film icon 4 star rating 12 certificate
Christian Carion's drama retells the true story of the impromptu Christmas ceasefire of 1914, just five months in to the carnage of the First World War. The narrative begins by setting the scene at the conflict's outbreak: Danish soprano Anna Sorensen's Berlin recital is interrupted with the news and her German lover, the tenor Nikolaus Sprink, is rushed off to enlist; while two Scottish lads are excited at the prospect of escaping their humdrum existence, their priest is significantly more sanguine about the affair. Then it's straight in to the horrors of the trenches, where French and British troops are often within earshot of their German adversaries - and all are potentially just moments from death. In addition to proposing a genesis for that extraordinary, spontaneous moment of peace and goodwill, there are glimpses of the combatants' lives and of the great divide between the ranks.
Director: Christian Carion
Starring: Diane Kruger, Natalie Dessay, Benno Fürmann, Rolando Villazón, Guillaume Canet, Gary Lewis

The Mechanic (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 15 certificate
Jason Statham stars in director Simon West's action retread of Michael Winner's 1972 revenge thriller. Arthur Bishop earns his living as a 'mechanic', a euphemism for hitman that betrays the precision and emotional detachment with which he goes about his business. And that even applies when he's contracted to kill his wheelchair-using mentor Harry McKenna, though he does at least demand to know why he should send his friend to an early grave. Things then get awkward for Bishop, when McKenna's son Steve asks if he'll tutor him. Their partnership develops in fits and starts, but Bishop's boss Dean Sanderson makes it clear he's not happy with the nascent partnership's latest assassination. So, with all the main players inherently suspicious, trained killers, and various motives for murder in the air, it won't take much to spark bloodshed - and that catalyst comes with an unexpected sighting at an airport.
Director: Simon West
Starring: Jason Statham, Ben Foster, Tony Goldwyn, Donald Sutherland, Jeff Chase, Mini Anden

Baby's Day Out (Film) Film icon 4 star rating PG certificate
Patrick Read Johnson's comedy, scripted by John Hughes, stars Joe Mantegna, Joe Pantoliano and Brian Haley as Eddie, Norby and Veeko, three inept criminals who kidnap Baby Bink, the son of a rich Chicago family. But while they are negotiating the ransom, Baby Bink escapes and begins to make his way back home. As the trio chase him, the infant manages to avoid a series of violent hazards, which his pursuers run straight into. The film owes much to the kind of cartoon violence that Road Runner inflicted upon Wile E Coyote, where falls and explosions are slapstick rather than fatal, while the interaction of the three criminals carries Hughes' trademark quick-fire humour. Edited for content.

Arrietty (Film) Film icon 4 star rating U certificate
Director Hiromasa Yonebayashi's first feature for the Japanese animation powerhouse Studio Ghibli is a charming adaptation of Mary Norton's classic children's tales about The Borrowers. This version takes place in an ordinary house, in an unremarkable Tokyo suburb. Of course, that's omitting one highly extraordinary fact: a family of tiny people live underneath the floorboards of the building's ground floor. The Clocks have a comfortable life, scavenging items from the 'human beans' living oblivious above them, which they beautifully transform into clothes, furniture and the rest of life's necessities.

Get Him to the Greek (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 15 certificate
Russell Brand and Jonah Hill star in Nicholas Stoller's boisterous comedy. Aaron Green works for a record company run by the increasingly unhinged Sergio and is a huge fan of the British rock star Aldous Snow. Sergio and Green hatch a plan for Snow to play, in just three days' time, Los Angeles's revered venue the Greek Theatre. Getting Snow from London to LA, via New York and Vegas, should be a doddle. But he's just fallen off the wagon, and the sleazy rocker's appetite for drink, drugs and attractive women complicate the journey so much that it's not clear whether Green will survive the rock star's hedonism. In addition to Combs' superbly energetic turn, Rose Byrne shines as Jackie Q, a role that satirises the record industry's fondness for marketing its female artists as sexual commodities. Also starring Elisabeth Moss, Colm Meaney and a host of real-life music icons.

Director: Patrick Read Johnson
Starring: Joe Mantegna, Lara-Flynn Boyle, Joe Pantoliano, Brian Haley, Cynthia Nixon, Fred Dalton Thompson

Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine star in Ronald Neame's comic heist caper. Harry is a cockney thief in Hong Kong, on the lookout for his next 'enriching' opportunity. Unfortunately, although she's keen to get her hands on the genuine British passport that Harry promises her, Nicole is adamant that she won't do anything illegal for it. Easy A (Film) Film icon 4 star rating 15 certificate
Director Will Gluck's intelligent and hilarious high school comedy stars Emma Stone in an outstanding lead performance. Olive Penderghast is something of an 'also ran' in her year at school, so when she spies the opportunity to make herself look a little more interesting and mature she jumps at it and falsely claims to a friend that she's lost her virginity to a college boy. However, what was supposed to be a confidential white lie becomes public, and soon she has the cachet of unprecedented notoriety around the entire school. But it's what happens next that's really interesting. Enjoying the glare of attention, she not only sets out to build on her newfound rep as a scarlet woman, she also subverts the moment to help some of the school's more picked-upon students.
