Kick-Ass (Film) Film icon 4 star rating 18 certificate
Concluding the British Connection Season, Matthew Vaughn's violent-but-hilarious action movie is a knowing take on the superhero genre, based on Mark Millar and John Romita Jr's comic-book series. Avid comic fan and New York high schooler Dave Lizewski has begun to wonder why his contemporaries are keener on vapid celebrity than wanting to emulate his heroes and try to make the world a better place. Thus Lizewski orders a simply hideous skiing outfit and dons it to become Kick-Ass, scourge of New York's criminals. Well that's the idea, but of course it's his ass that gets kicked when he first tries to put his plan into action.
Director: Matthew Vaughn
Starring: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Mark Strong, Chloë Grace Moretz, Nicolas Cage, Lyndsy Fonseca

Super (Film) Film icon 18 certificate
James Gunn's vigilante black comedy starring Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page and Liv Tyler. Frank D'Arbo is a short-order chef whose wife Sarah has just left him for a drug dealer called Jacques. That would be enough to make anyone feel bitter, but there are also deeper, darker facets to Frank's troubled character. And, after experiencing a bizarre religious revelation, it's not a massive surprise to see him stitching together a red 'superhero' outfit and, as The Crimson Bolt, heading out in the world to dispense summary justice. But what is surprising is the degree of violence with which the wrench-wielding vigilante attacks largely innocent bystanders - as is the relationship the anger-crazed middle-aged man develops with Libby, a much younger woman who works in a comic-book store.
Director: James Gunn
Starring: Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, Michael Rooker, Andre Royo
(Widescreen, Subtitles, Audio Described, 2010, 18)

The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 12 certificate
Zac Efron takes the title role in this supernatural romantic fantasy from director Burr Steers. Life is looking good for teenager Charlie St Cloud: in spite of his relatively humble origins, his competitive yachting career is progressing nicely and he has just gained acceptance to an Ivy League School. But all this good stuff is destroyed in an instant when his brother Sam is killed in a car crash. Charlie turns his back on the world and takes a job in the cemetery where Sam is buried. It's here that the supernatural element kicks in, as Charlie can see and interact with the spirits of the dead, which means he can continue to spend time with his beloved sibling. But Charlie's world isn't entirely ethereal and, when he falls for his former classmate - and sailing equal - Tess Carroll, he finds himself forced to choose between his love for Tess and that for Sam, between the living and the dead. Shakespeare in Love (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 15 certificate
Tom Stoppard provided the witty and intelligent script for John Madden's romantic comedy in which young Will Shakespeare struggles with writer's block and money worries while trying to complete Romeo and Ethel: The Pirate's Daughter. Gwyneth Paltrow once more employs her faultless English accent, playing aristocratic Viola de Lesseps, who is shortly to be married off but yearns to slum it as an actor. Disguising herself as a boy in order to be allowed on stage, Viola becomes Will's muse, and the more familiar tale of Romeo and Juliet begins to take shape as the couple fall passionately in love. The film is littered with knowing lines and energetically supported by a stellar cast, including Judy Dench as Queen Elizabeth - a cameo performance which earned her one of the movie's seven Oscars.
Director: John Madden
Starring: Geoffrey Rush, Tom Wilkinson, Steven O'Donnell, Tim McMullan, Joseph Fiennes, Steven Beard
(Widescreen, Subtitles, 1998, 15, 3 Star)

Dane's team of merciless thugs take control of the train, from where the destructive satellite can be operated without detection, as long as the locomotive doesn't stop. Ben Rivers' enigmatic documentary traces the everyday life of Jake Williams, an ageing man living alone in a remote area of Scotland. When they discover that they were framed and that a massive currency counterfeiting operation is afoot, it's time for them to break out of prison and prove their innocence by tracking down the baddies, saving the US dollar, and, of course, blowing up as many objects as possible along the way. Johnny Mad Dog (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 15 certificate
Jean-Stephane Sauvaire's widely praised, grimly realistic drama portrays the brutal lives of African child soldiers, and features a cast largely consisting of first-time actors, some of whom had themselves been child soldiers. The film was shot in conflict-devastated Liberia and follows a troop of children and youths sent as a vanguard by the rebels to take control of a government position. They are led by a teenager known only as Johnny Mad Dog, and as they advance they heap terror, death and atrocity on anyone who gets in their way. Loaded with heavy weaponry, the bizarrely attired but surprisingly organised mini militia psyche themselves for battle and barbarity by chanting slogans, drinking alcohol and rubbing cocaine into their wounds, often expressly inflicted for the purpose. Meanwhile, across town, Laokole, roughly the same age as Johnny Mad Dog, is desperately trying to get her wounded father out of the conflict zone.
Director: Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire
Starring: Carlos Badawi, Teddy Boy, Maxwell Carter, Amil Cash, Galaxy Chea, Jerry B. Chea

Catherine Hardwicke's account of the birth of Christ stars Keisha Castle-Hughes as Mary and Oscar Isaac as Joseph. From the appearance of the angel Gabriel, through Joseph's acceptance that she is indeed carrying the Son of God, to their trip to Bethlehem, the film is always respectful, with strong performances from the two leads who portray very real human emotions rather than those of saints.

When she starts to get broody, one of John's colleagues suggests they see how they cope with a puppy before trying for a baby, so John picks a cute yellow Labrador retriever, Marley, as a gift for Jenny. However, as they approach Earth, a mysterious probe wreaks havoc with the planet's climate. The probe's message, interpreted by Spock, is meant for humpback whales only. But humpback whales have long been extinct, so the planet's only hope is for Spock and his team to travel back in time, in a stolen Klingon craft, to bring back a pair of whales. The script allows for a lot of fish-out-of-water jokes as the crew find themselves in 1980s San Francisco, with Spock's inability to master swearing a running gag, but there's also tension, as the clock ticks down in the future, with marine biologist Gillian Taylor their best hope of finding suitable whales to save a future Earth. Funny Games (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 18 certificate
Michael Haneke's American remake of his 1997 German thriller loses none of the terror or horror of the original in this translation. An all-American family - George, Ann and son Georgie - arrive at their summer cottage for a yachting holiday. Two polite young men, Paul and Peter introduce themselves as neighbours but suddenly and brutally instil a nihilistic, sadistic regime on the family, playing mind games and torturing them. Haneke famously makes the audience complicit to events, boldly breaking the fourth wall, and while the violence largely happens off screen it remains horribly audible throughout.

Nostalgia for the Light (Film) Film icon 4 star rating 12 certificate
Chilean director Patricio Guzman's film is a poetic and moving documentary about searching for the past. It explores how the lofty altitude and arid conditions of Chile's Atacama Desert have seen the area, far from any light pollution, become a magnet for astronomers. But Guzman also weaves in to his narrative the region's inescapably dark recent past. The film's title is derived from that of a book by French scientist Michel Cass?, which reflects upon how, just as the Atacama was set to become a global centre for modern astronomy, a USA-backed coup brought General Augusto Pinochet to power and closed off the country from the rest of the world.
Director: Patricio Guzmán

Leonard Nimoy directs and stars in the follow-up to The Search for Spock, as the reborn Spock. With the USS Enterprise destroyed, he, Kirk, Scotty and Dr McCoy have been in exile on Vulcan, awaiting trial for disobeying orders. The King of Pigs (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 15 certificate
Korean director Yeon Sang-ho's debut animation examines bullying within Korea's social hierarchies; a world away from the visual style of Japan's Studio Ghibli, it has the feel of a collaboration between Quentin Tarantino and the makers of King of the Hill. Erupting with brutal violence from the outset, The King of Pigs lets us in to the lives of Kyung-min and Jong-Suk. Both now struggling to make their way in the worlds of business and literature, they meet up to discuss their childhood. At school, the pair were designated as members of a nerdy underclass called the 'pigs' and relentlessly, viciously picked upon by a clique of tormentors known as the 'dogs'. Salvation, or at least survival, for the 'pigs' came in the form of the worryingly troubled, extremely bellicose Chul, a former classmate who, despite having dropped out of school, takes cruel satisfaction in gorily avenging the 'dogs' misdeeds. Compliance (Film) Film icon 15 certificate
Pat Healy, Ann Dowd and Dreama Walker star in writer-director Craig Zobel's extremely disturbing fact-based thriller that explores the power we invest in figures of authority. Middle-aged Sandra works for the ChickWich fast-food chain as a manager. One day, she takes a phone call from a man identifying himself as Officer Daniels. Daniels tells Sandra he has received a complaint that a blonde member of her staff has stolen money from a customer. He tells Sandra that, until the police arrive, she should isolate the culprit and await further instructions. Used to unquestioningly following her company's commands and instantly identifying her twentysomething colleague Becky as the only person fitting the description given by Daniels, Sandra complies.

Understandably, Michael isn't keen to hang around and let the mobsters claim their prize easily, so he goes on the run, taking along his neighbour Brenda and his father. But Brenda knows more than she's letting on, and Michael's father has been, well, rather erratic of late. Neither of these factors improves Michael's chances of survival. Patience (After Sebald) (Film) Film icon 12 certificate
Using the late WG Sebald's book The Rings of Saturn as its template, Grant Gee's wide-ranging documentary traces the immensely respected author's account of a walk through Suffolk; a tour which prompted tangential musings upon history, literature, life, death, decay and immortality. The writer was born in Bavaria in 1944 but moved to England in 1970, settling in Norwich, where he taught at the University of East Anglia until his death in a car crash in 1995. Gee's film, shot mainly in grainy black and white, journeys the same sections of Suffolk countryside, coastal margins and urban areas as Sebald's peregrination. The cinematography is accompanied by extracts from The Rings of Saturn, read by actor Jonathan Pryce, along with contributions from a few of the many people who knew or were influenced by the author and academic, including artist Tacita Dean, writer Robert Macfarlane, cultural historian Marina Warner, poet Andrew Motion and author Iain Sinclair. Film4 premiere.

Mr. Nice (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 18 certificate
Rhys Ifans stars as Britain's most notorious drug smuggler, Howard Marks, in this loosely factual biopic, based on Marks's 1996 autobiography, from director Bernard Rose. The narrative tracks the illicit career of Oxford graduate Marks from its early days in the 1970s, when he discovered his teacher training course was never likely to match the money and excitement that came from importing marijuana into the UK, through his bumbling rise to being the world's top dope runner, and on to its inevitable shuddering halt, thanks to the law. Along the way, his eclectic contacts include the IRA's Jim McCann, as well as MI6 operative Hamilton McMillan, who attempts to sign him up for the British secret services. The whirlwind ride features plenty of humour and also stars Chlo? Sevigny as Marks's long-suffering wife Judy, plus Omid Djalili and a cameo from the late director Ken Russell.

Chan-wook Park's visceral thriller begins when Dae-su Oh, an obnoxious drunk, is bailed from the police station yet again by a friend. But he's abducted from the street and wakes up in a cell where he remains for the next 15 years, drugged unconscious when human contact is unavoidable, otherwise with only the television as company. Then he is suddenly released and invited to track down his jailor. His path to revenge incorporates a superbly choreographed fight against multiple foes in which he is armed with just a hammer, and a scene which features the ingestion of a live octopus. It's not easy viewing but it's always compelling.

Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (Film) Film icon 3 star rating U certificate
For a brief period in the 1960s, there was a fad for madcap movies such as It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Monte Carlo or Bust!, The Great Race and Around the World in 80 Days; and Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines is among those that worked. Newspaper publisher Lord Rawnsley puts up a £10,000 prize for the winner of a flight from London to Paris and soon his daughter Patricia, her would-be husband Richard, his rival for her hand and a motley collection of aviators are gathered, ready for the race to begin. Among them, of course, is the requisite villain, Sir Percy Ware-Armitage, aided by his put-upon servant Courtney.

Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 12 certificate
Hark Tsui's action-murder-mystery is set in late seventh-century China, during the Tang dynasty. Andy Lau stars as the eponymous sleuth who, despite having languished in prison for treason, is released and charged with investigating the strange deaths of officials working on a monument that's intended to mark the inauguration of Empress Wu Zetian. Dee soon finds himself at the centre of a maelstrom of plots and murderous animosities - but who is at the heart of the conspiracy to disrupt the coronation of China's first female ruler, and will Dee survive long enough to find out? Tsui's exhilarating thriller zips along at a smart pace, with great CGI effects and tonnes of martial-arts set-pieces. The character of Dee is based on a real-life official who was credited with tempering the crueller excesses of China's only female ruler; his exploits passed into legend, and were eventually popularised in the West via the Dutch author Robert van Gulik, who published his first adventure in 1949.

Twenty years later, after saying 'yes' to their respective fiancés, they've instructed their wedding planner to book the ceremony of their dreams. But because of a clerical error they're both given the same slot, and neither is willing to concede. Instead, their friendship is jettisoned as they resort to underhand tactics in a bid to sabotage each other and fulfil their marriage fantasies... Step Up 3 (Film) Film icon 12 certificate
Rick Malambri, Adam G Sevani and Sharni Vinson star in this dance spectacular. A crew of New York street dancers must win the top prize in a competition or face losing the building where they live and try out their new choreography routines. Along the way, the plot encompasses love stories and even a police chase, but of course it's really all about the dancing - which bursts forth in abundance and enough variety to please any hoofing fan. Indeed, the coruscating dance routines, from a cast composed largely of professional dancers rather than actors, is undoubtedly the film's main strength. First play on Film4. Edited for content.
Director: Jon Chu
Starring: Rick Malambri, Adam G. Sevani, Sharni Vinson, Alyson Stoner, Keith Stallworth, Kendra Andrews
