Virgin Media poll names Wayne Rooney villain of the year

Thursday, December 23rd 2010

The footballer received almost a quarter of the votes in the annual contest.
A Virgin Media poll has revealed Wayne Rooney is the UK's number one celebrity villain of the year.

The cable broadband, home phone and digital TV provider surveyed almost 7,000 people, with the Manchester United and England footballer winning 24 per cent of the vote.

Teen pop star Justin Bieber finished narrowly behind him with 22 per cent, while Mary Bale - the lady filmed dumping a cat in a bin - and Gillian McKeith were named in third and fourth place respectively.

Wagner Carrilho from ITV1's The X Factor and former MP Ann Widdecombe, who appeared in BBC One's latest series of Strictly Come Dancing, finished equal fifth with eight per cent of the votes.

Alison Davis, director of online at Virgin Media, commented: "Whilst Wayne Rooney's love-rat behaviour certainly warrants his place in the villain's poll, what is surprising is that teen idol Justin Bieber came in at number two."

Katie Price topped the 2009 chart after receiving 2,334 votes.
