UK needs universal fibre optic broadband now, says expert

Tuesday, December 14th 2010

Faster speeds are needed to help the country recover from the effects of the recession.
Universal fibre optic broadband needs to be deployed in the UK sooner rather than later, according to a former MP once voted one of the world's top 100 internet visionaries.

Derek Wyatt, the founder of new thinktank the Internet Policy Institute, argued the government's plan to roll out the technology to every community by 2015 is not ambitious enough, reports the Kent News.

Faster broadband speeds are needed as soon as possible if the country is to recover from the effects of the recession, Mr Wyatt insisted.

"I think pushing it out to five years is too much," the former Sittingbourne and Sheppey MP said. "We need to spend as fast as we can to extend the service, because we risk being left behind if we don't."

His comments come after Antony Walker, chief executive of the Broadband Stakeholder Group, questioned whether the government would be able to hit its super-fast broadband target while being hampered by "constrained public spending".
