The European Union has reportedly granted clearance to state aid for the Shetland Islands' fibre optic broadband project.

Shetland fibre broadband project reportedly wins EU approval

Islanders will get access to super-fast broadband thanks to the European Union's clearance of state aid.

Marvin Smith, manager of the scheme, expressed his satisfaction at the announcement, which should allow work to improve the area's broadband infrastructure to get underway in mid-January 2011, reports the Shetland Times.

Councillors are targeting connecting Lerwick to a fibre optic cable "point of presence" at Hoswick, the newspaper explained, with Scalloway set to be hooked up later in the year.

Scottish finance secretary John Swinney revealed in September that the Shetland Fibre Optic Network initiative had been awarded £367,500 in European Regional Development Fund cash.

The project will link the community to a cable that has recently been laid between the Faroe Islands and mainland Scotland.

At the time of the announcement, Mr Swinney commented: "This is particularly good news for residents and businesses in Shetland, where the fibre optic cable will greatly enhance broadband connections
