Content is a growing business for Spain’s largest telco, whose recently-appointed president plans to strengthen this even more by launching a global production company.

According to inside sources quoted by the financial newspaper Cinco Días, Telefónica intends to use DTS, parent house of Canal+, which was acquired last year, as base to build up a more international content producer.

This new company, which may be called Movistar Plus, will operate in a similar way to the telco’s pay-TV platform in Spain, Movistar+. It will target two big business areas: creation and acquisition of content, and worldwide commercialisation.

The plans of Telefónica’s new president, José María Álvarez-Pallete, align with the intentions of the company’s former head, César Alierta. Over last two years, the telco has been slowly entering the content production arena as it expands its pay-TV operations in Spain and Latin America.

Now, also with an over-the-top (OTT) expansion up and running in LATAM, Telefónica aims to compete better with other video players, such as Netflix, Televisa or Claro.

According to Cinco Días, the telco’s workers have already been notified of important structural changes to take place within this year in order to build a single and global content unit.
