Suffolk and Essex reportedly trailing in BT Race to Infinity

Tuesday, December 14th 2010

.Residents of the two counties have been urged to cast their votes in the scheme.
Suffolk and Essex are lagging behind in their demand for BT's fibre optic broadband service.

The company's Race to Infinity scheme, in which residents and businesses across the UK have the chance to bring super-fast broadband to their areas, is due to end on New Year's Eve.

According to the East Anglian Daily Times, Wickham Market - which has received 221 votes, representing 11.8 per cent of people covered by the exchange - is currently in pole position in these two counties.

In contrast, the overall UK leaders - including the villages of Blewbury in Oxfordshire and Caxton in Cambridgeshire - have registered more than 1,000 votes each in the initiative.

Peter McCarthy, BT's regional director for the east of England, stressed the importance of more people getting involved in the Race to Infinity.

"Every vote does count because, whether communities win the race or not, each vote is an indication of demand for the next generation of broadband in Suffolk and Essex," he commented.
