Sky wins mobile Premiership rights

''Another report on this subject''

BSkyB is to broadcast English Premier League football to mobile phones following the company's success in securing the final package of rights to games. The UK's dominant pay-television provider will offer action from 380 top-fight matches per season for three years, starting with the 2007-2008 fixtures. Post-game highlights will be made available along with goals and key moments from some matches as they are being played. Full details of the service will be announced at a later date.

Sky Sports currently supplies text and video content to all mobile networks in the UK and Ireland.

The bid—the financial details of which have not been revealed—was made in partnership with News Group Newspapers, publisher of The Sun and News of the World tabloids, which will jointly market and promote the new mobile TV services. News Group is part of Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation media conglomerate that controls BSkyB via its 37.9% stake.

The broadcaster's director of business development, Stephen Nuttall, said: "Sky has now secured TV, online and mobile rights to the Premiership and can promise the widest range of services and the most flexible ways of viewing across multiple platforms."

He added: "With these new rights, we can offer Premiership football on the move. Fans can look forward to using their mobile to keep up to date with all the Premiership action".

The company's 14-year monopoly ownership of live television rights for Premier League matches was brought to an end earlier this year, when rival broadcaster Setanta Sports paid £392m for rights to 46 live fixtures.
