Plot Summary: During the Cold War, nothing loomed as large in the public mind as the bomb. When the Soviet Empire collapsed, the bomb became a symbol of another era. Naively we felt the danger had passed. In recent years, the threat of nuclear proliferation has grown more urgent, and the political will to eliminate nuclear weapons is greater than ever in our history.

We have now entered a second nuclear age. Nuclear weapons have proliferated to nine nations, and that number could continue to grow, as over 40 nations have the technical capacity to construct nuclear weapons. Terrorists are actively seeking nuclear weapons and fissile material, not to use as political leverage, but rather as tools of mass destruction. Equally as great a threat is human error; the possibility of an accident increases every day.

"Countdown to Zero" is a fascinating and frightening exploration of the dangers of nuclear weapons, exposing a variety of present day threats and featuring insights from a host of international experts and world leaders who advocate total global disarmament.

Plot Summary: Engaging, emotional and riveting, "Farewell" is an intricate and highly intelligent thriller pulled from the pages of history— about an ordinary man thrust into the biggest theft of soviet information of the Cold War. A piece of history largely unknown until now, which Ronald Reagan called "one of the most important espionage cases of the 20th century." Directed by Christian Carion, the Academy Award® nominated filmmaker of "Joyeux Noel (Merry Christmas)," "Farewell" begins in 1981, after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. US/Soviet relations are at their lowest point in more than a decade. A French businessman based in Moscow, Pierre Froment, (French director Guillaume Canet, "Tell No One"), makes an unlikely connection with Grigoriev, (Palme d'Or and Golden Bear winner Emir Kusturica, "Underground") a senior KGB officer disenchanted with what the Communist ideal has become under Brezhnev. Grigoriev begins passing him highly sensitive information about the Soviet spy network in the US. Torn between the fear of putting his wife (Alexandra Maria Lara, "The Reader") and children in danger and the desire to know more, Froment brings the documents to the French government. Soon, the flow of information reaches the White House and brings the Soviet regime to the tipping point of collapse, forcing the KGB to escalate its search for the leak, and placing the two men and their families in extreme peril.

Studio: Variance Films
Director: Victor Nunez
Screenwriter: William T. Conway, Joe Ray Sandoval
Starring: Kuno Becker, Ruben Blades, Miguel Sandoval, Persia White
Genre: Drama
MPAA Rating: Not Available
Official Website: SpokenWordmovie.com

Plot Summary: From acclaimed director Victor Nunez ("Ulee's Gold"), "Spoken Word" tells the story of Cruz Montoya (Kuno Becker, "Goal!," "From Mexico With Love"), a rock star on the West Coast poetry circuit, where audiences from San Diego to Seattle gather to hear him perform. Just off the road from a successful tour, he gets an unexpected phone call alerting him that his father, Senior (Rubén Blades, "Predator 2," "Once Upon a Time in Mexico"), is fatally ill.

Cruz rushes home to his dying father, a reclusive former school teacher still leading a traditional life in their once bucolic mountain valley, now ravaged by poverty, drug abuse, and violence. After years away, Cruz quickly begins to retreat into his troubled former life, managing a Santa Fe hip-hop club owned by a local crime boss, Emilio (Miguel Sandoval, "Bottle Shock," "Clear and Present Danger"), who Senior used to run with back in the day. Seduced by the fast action and easy money, Cruz loses his poetic voice, his identity, and almost his life, before he finds a way to heal his relationships with his family, his community, and himself.

A nuanced depiction of an evolving father-son relationship, "Spoken Word" depicts the edgy collision of old and new worlds in a rare, authentic portrait of Latino culture in the Southwest, illustrating how cultural roles and machismo can give way when families can move beyond words, both spoken and unspoken, to share the language of their hearts.
