Memorial Board Opening
Devoted to the 50 Anniversary of the First Manned Space Flight
Date: April 11, Monday
Location: St. Petersburg, Petrograd side. Novoladozhskaya St., 4

The site of the former factory "Vulcan" (today, the Russian General Satellite Corporation is situated on the site - the leading developer and manufacturer of television STBs)

April 11, 2011, at 14.00, Y.A. Gagarin memorial board opening ceremony was held at the entrance of the former factory "Vulcan". Yuri Gagarin had an industrial practice there in 1955. Today, The General Satellite Corporation, the leading developer and manufacturer of STBs in Russia, creates equipment for satellite TV – in the same building - using space technology.

April 12, 2011 is the 20-th anniversary of the first dish antenna installation by the General Satellite. Opening of a memorial board to commemorate the 50 anniversary of the first manned flight in space demonstrated the continuity of the General Satellite Corporation in its effort to maintain and increase the domestic high technology expertise in microelectronics and telecommunications.

Speeches during the memorial board opening ceremony:

Alexander A. Demidov, the Chairman of the Information and Communication Committee of the St. Petersburg Government: it is profoundly symbolic that it is in the former Vulcan factory, where Yuri Gagarin had his practice, that we are opening an honorary board in honor of the two events. I would like to congratulate, first of all, the veterans of the Vulcan plant, which did a lot for the city and continued to work during the war. Besides the main reason - the 50-th anniversary of the first man in space flight, we celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Russian General Satellite Corporation that has settled in the same facility - a leading developer and producer of television set-top boxes used by more than 8 million Russians. On behalf of the Government of St. Petersburg, I would like to thank the Company for the tribute to the first cosmonaut of the planet, to congratulate the management and the employees of the General Satellite on the twentieth anniversary, and I wish you to be a great success and prosper.

Paul A. Chumakov, Innovation Director, the General Satellite Corporation: Who would have thought 20 years ago, that a small company that just started to do the installation of satellite dishes would in 20 years become the largest national developer and manufacturer of equipment for receiving and transmitting digital television signals? Likewise, a young intern, Yuri Gagarin, probably hardly thought that in a few years he would become the first man to go beyond Earth. 20 years from the standpoint of humanity, probably, are not a very long time, but in terms of life of the individual they are enormous. It is always nice to see it, to look back and realize that these 20 years were not wasted. The General Satellite Company, during this time, became not just the major national developer of satellite equipment, but also a leader in quality in the telecommunication field, a model of professionalism and commitment to progress. This spirit of innovation, inherent in the pioneers of space, we are trying to preserve and multiply. We are proud that the name of Yuri Gagarin is related to the place where an advanced domestic technology in microelectronics and telecommunications is born today.
