2010 could be the year of the Android, and LG is making that one of its core focus by introducing its first Android mobile device, the LG GW620.
Simply Basic
The Korean chaebol is known for its outstanding aesthetic designs, but the GW620 is somewhat lacking in that aspect, looking just like any other Android phone that's been released so far. Without the characteristic slimness nor feather-light weight associated with LG devices, the GW620's bulk and dimensions were quite a handful for us.
A 3.0-inch screen running at a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels occupies the front. Like the HTC Tattoo, the GW620 sports a resistive panel instead of the usual capacitive ones seen on most Android devices. The touch-sensitive Home and Back buttons might hinder your user experience since we had numerous accidental clicks in our daily usage.
Underneath all that plastic is the QWERTY keyboard. We usually prefer physical text input, but the stiffness and flat layout of the keys gave us a fair bit of trouble with typing.
Social Butterfly
With a plethora of upcoming devices sporting at least Android 1.6, or even the newer Android 2.0, the GW620 opts for version 1.5. The differences in features are minor, and LG makes up for that with its own unique features. This includes the Social Networking Sites (SNS) app that gives you instant access to Facebook and Twitter. It's not exactly perfect, since it is an app and not a widget that populates your home screen.
The camera interface also gets a similar look to the imaging-centric LG Viewty Smart. Advanced imaging options are available within the camera setup, such as Beauty Shot, Smile Shot, and other settings such as ISO for you to tweak with. And when you do capture a face, facial recognition is done. Images that are recognized as faces will be displayed in the Gallery, under People.
The aim is to assign each faces to a specific contact, which can also be linked to specific Facebook or Twitter accounts. However, the effort involved is tremendous and can leave you drained if you have an exhaustive list of people in your address book.
Yet, with all these newfangled features, the GW620's imaging experience felt sluggish. Fortunately, this seems to be an isolated case for the camera feature. Across the board, the GW620 felt sufficiently speedy when we scrolled through its interface and loaded apps. The bundled 1500mAh battery is the deal sweetener for the GW620, clocking in at an impressive two days worth of internet and cellular usage.
Final Thoughts
Evidently, social networking will remain the talk of the town for the new decade. The inclusion of Facebook and Twitter support on mobile devices such as the GW620 is an indication of how mobile manufacturers are trying to keep up in a competitive market. For that matter, if one were not so picky about the design and aesthetics, the LG GW620 will be great for smartphone users on a budget.
