Help for echolink 888 FTA+

I have rent an apartment and I found this receiver.
I surfed internet and than I found what it was.

I've a laptop now, and I want to update the software.
I bought an USB to Serial adapter

but after I connected them, the loader remains on "test serial port status"

I saw with hyperterminal that the cable works ( the computer and echolink can see each others

is it a software problem? ( loader bug ... )
or a port configuration? ( fast, slow ... )

the cable has 9 pins

I need to buy a new adapter?
It's impossible with a laptop?

The decoader must be switched off from the switch at the back.
When you see the message 'test serial port status' switch the decoader on and it should work if you set the right com port
