BT connects Montrose properties to high-speed broadband

Thursday, December 23rd 2010

More than 6,700 premises in the Scottish community now have access to the technology.
BT has announced Montrose in Scotland is the latest town to be connected to its 21st Century Network (21CN) high-speed broadband infrastructure.

More than 6,700 properties in the Angus community now have access to the technology, with the telecoms giant claiming the service will be available to around 52 per cent of Scottish premises by spring 2011.

The 21CN uses copper wires to deliver speeds of up to 20Mbps, which is more than double the capacity that was previously received across the majority of the UK.

Brendan Dick, director of BT Scotland, said this latest rollout is part of the company's ongoing investment in providing the country with next-generation broadband.

He added: "Faster broadband can help businesses become more competitive and greatly improve the online services available to families, home workers and other internet users."

This news comes after a DTZ Consulting report found BT generated £527 million for the Scottish economy in the 2009-10 financial year.
