Break up with Skystar HD USB

I recently changed from my internal Skystar 2 PCI card to the external Skystar HD USB version, but I now find that channels are often breaking up for no reason (i.e. they are good strong signals, often showing 100% quality, it's not because of a weak/borderline signal).
This is momentary but very irritating and often resulting in the sound going out of sync.

I'm using the latest drivers and have had the same happen with ProgDVB (various versions), SmartDVB and DVB Dream. It's connected to a USB2 port which doesn't have a shared IRQ and it doesn't seem to make any difference between SD or HD in terms of break up. With full HD the processor usage is around 25%, SD around 5%.

I'm using XP, Athlon Phenom X4 955 3.21GHz, 3.25GB RAM.

Any suggestions/advice welcome.
