Benelux DTH viewers lose Turner channels

By Robert Briel

June 30, 2009

TCM, Cartoon Network and Boomerang will no longer be part of the DTH platforms Canal Digitaal Satelliet and TV Vlaanderen from tomorrow (July 1).

According to local press reports, the satellite provider has not been able to secure a distribution deal with the Turner channels, which have been part of the DTH offer for many years.

Although a similar situation happened with National Geographic in the past, the channel was reinstated following viewers’ complaints.

The Benelux DTH platforms distribute the two channels (TCM and Cartoon Network in channel-share and a separate channel for Boomerang) on their own capacity on Astra. Once freed up, this capacity could be used for other channels.

One possibility could be an HD channel from the Dutch public broadcasters
