Aung San Suu Kyi to appear weekly on VOA Burmese call-in

Suu Myat Mon, host of Burmese call-in programme.

Burmese opposition leader and Nobel Peace Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi will take part in a weekly VOA call-in show every Wednesday morning (Burmese time) to answer listeners’ questions on a broad range of political, social, and economic issues.

“Aung San Suu Kyi has spent much of the last 20 years of her life under house arrest simply because she wanted to bring democracy to the Burmese people,” said VOA Director Danforth Austin. “We hope that her participation in the VOA Burmese programme will lead to free and open discussion of issues affecting Burma.”

This week’s programme focused on Aung San Suu Kyi’s efforts to win back legal status of the National League of Democracy Party. She said the NLD should be granted legal status because “it is fully supported by the people.” The country’s military government disbanded the National League of Democracy Party after it boycotted the November general election. Last week, a court rejected its appeal to be reestablished.

“Aung San Suu Kyi’s answers to our listeners’ emailed questions at the beginning of the programme will be followed by calls from listeners throughout Burma,” said VOA Burmese Service Chief Lwin Htun Than. “This format gives us flexibility to get not only Aung San Suu Kyi’s opinion but also the thoughts of our callers as well.”

VOA’s Burmese Service broadcasts news and information to Burma six hours a day, seven days a week.
