Accessing Biss 2

Afternoon all

Can I ask what do we know about biss2 and how we could go about accessing it legitimately. I know I’d need a registered Mediakind/Ericsson RX8200 receiver and possibly it would need to be bought and registered from Eurovision Services but I’m wondering how it would need to be done and how it would work regarding licensing etc? Would you need to be a media company?

Thanks I’m advance

The EBU will only license receivers to approved users such as broadcasters, media outlets and agents within the industry.
You can buy a MediaKind RX8200 easily enough from any source and get it updated with biss-2 firmware, it does not have to be from the EBU.
However, unless the serial number of the receiver is registered in the EBU database for the appropriate biss-2 feeds it will not be able to decode them.

For a joe solo user, they need to locate someone who will act on their behalf with the capabilities to get the receiver registered in the EBU database.
Anyone willing to do this would probably need to be "incentivised" with a seriously thick brown envelope, probably beyond the means of most two bob traders.
The brown envelope recipient could possibly face harsh consequences if found out.

Alternatively, anyone lucky enough to have a family member or very close friend working in the relevant area might get a result?

The same logic applies to EBU controlled NS3/NS4 transmissions receivable with an NS2000 receiver.

Hi @moonbase

Thanks for the reply.

I was thinking more along the lines of what capabilities are required to get a receiver registered and wether you could set up a small media company/agent and be able to get a receiver registered, possibly offshore even.

I have a reliable source that tells me the big European leagues will move to biss 2 for 24/25 season so starting to look at other sources now.

Any media company or other type of applicant would be vetted by the EBU before getting approved.
In addition, feed access is restricted on a per feed basis by the EBU so that only bona fide parties who have a genuine reason for access are granted it.

For example, BT Sport may have soccer feeds in biss-2, they tell the EBU these feeds are to be protected distribution to specific nominated end users.
There is no chance "joe solo Media Incorporated" based in Cyprus has a bone fide reason to be given access even though their MediaKind RX8200 is in the EBU database.
To decode the feed, the MediaKind RX8200 would probably need to be loaded with the specific xml file that allows reception of the event. These xml files are not static, they change and can be distributed to approved end users on a per feed basis.

Unless you have a contact in a mainstream broadcaster or an insider in the EBU it will be very difficult to gain access.
A shell media company aint gonna cut it, the EBU aint mugs, they will see though it straight away.
