Planetbeing Says Untethered iOS 6.0.2 Jailbreak Is Complete For The iPhone 5, It Is Just Missing A Few Pieces

Earlier today we broke a story of Pod2G essentially stating that the reports of the end of Jailbreaking were greatly exaggerated. Furthermore the new #weWantAnOpenIOS hashtag that Pod2G got trending on Twitter was not a sign of defeat from the French hacker, it was merely a wakeup call to try to get Apple to realize developers want better APIs that go above sandbox.

Now on a Reddit thread related to the matter, we have heard from none other than @Planetbeing. Who, for those of you who don’t know, seems to be the most active in developing the Untethered iOS 6 Jailbreak.

Yeah, I’m not really sure what all the doom and gloom is about. The fact is, I have an untethered iOS 6.0.2 JB running on my iPhone 5 right now. The reasons it’s not released are because 1. releasing it would burn an exploit we want to save for ourselves so we can always get in to look at new firmware and help JB in the future, 2. iOS 6.1 is coming very soon and will likely break a small part of it anyway, there’s no point in sacrificing the many bugs it won’t break.

Anyway, where there are 4+ bugs (that it took to get this to work), there’s gotta be one or two more so while jailbreaking is getting harder, reports of its death are highly exaggerated.

This is not stuff I want to say over Twitter with 140 characters because I’m afraid of starting some sort of riot, but I like the smaller /r/jailbreakcommunity more.

Some good news that has come out of this, is that we know iOS 6.0.2 has been Jailbroken and thus is safe to update to. Even better, it will be likely that Planetbeing and other developers will wait until iOS 6.1 to drop until they release anything, as there is no point burning bugs when a new firmware version is coming so soon. Another reason Planetbeing is holding off on releasing the Jailbreak is because he wants to find another bug so he does not have to give up one key exploit that himself and other developers use as a starting point for developing Jailbreaks. He further goes on to say…

[Pod2G] told me last night he looked into a couple of bugs (without much success) recently, after basically not being around since WWJC, so that’s cool. I doubt he wants to promise he’ll be around working on this full time however. I haven’t worked on any jailbreak stuff for a couple of months as well, not until basically I was flying back from 29C3 in Germany and realized/remembered I actually know about enough bugs to put together an entire untethered jailbreak (still unreleasable due to reasons I stated in my other comment here).

In case you needed more proof the Planetbeing definitely has a working iOS 6.0.2 Untethered Jailbreak, Saurik dropped by to get his word in.

I actually was working with pod2g (albeit with a worse headache than I’ve had in at least a year, so mostly as a “gdb test monkey”), and can thereby personally attest that he didn’t just say it, he actually did it.

It looks like the state of the iOS 6 untethered Jailbreak is looking up after all, this is the most positive news we have heard in a long time. As always, we will keep you guys updated when we heard more information, until that time let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Planetbeing And Pod2G Make More Progress On The iOS 6 Untethered Jailbreak

Pod2G is a busy individual to say the least and despite announcing he would be leaving the Jailbreaking community to focus on his own business, it looks like this hasn’t stopped him from at least pitching in on the iOS 6 Untethered Jailbreak.

Planetbeing, one of the main hackers behind the iOS 6 Untethered Jailbreak, tweeted yesterday that he had made some nice progress with Pod2G on the Jailbreak. Pod2G then followed up by explaining the two had found two new vulnerabilities in one day! I call that a productive day to say the least.

Despite the iOS 6 Untethered Jailbreak still needing initial code execution, it seems like a release date could be getting closer and closer. Once code execution is found it will come down to testing it across multiple devices and integrating it in a program such as RedSn0w or Absinthe.

Pod2G also followed up to someone asking whether these vulnerabilities applied to the 3rd generation Apple TV, but unfortunately this is not the case. Pod2G reiterated that “ if it’s difficult to break a standard iDevice, you can imagine that’s even tougher for ATV3.”

Although there is still quite a bit of work to do on the iOS 6 Untethered Jailbreak, it is great to hear of more progress being made and also to see Pod2G return to the Jailbreak community.

[h=2]iOS 6 Jailbreak For iPhone 5 And iPad Mini By Team Evad3rs Will Likely Be Released After iOS 6.1[/h]

There’s been a lot of talk over the last few months about the future of jailbreaking and whether or not we will continue to see jailbreaks actively worked on by the dev-teams as Apple make internal security changes to iOS. There’s no denying that the mood within the jailbreak community has been extremely sombre of late as users live without that elusive device liberation on iOS 6 and newer devices, but it looks like things are about to take a turn for the positive.
Figureheads of the community like Pod2g, Planetbeing, Musclenerd and Pimskeks today have announced the birth of a new iOS 6 jailbreak team called Evad3rs, with the good news being that it looks like they may just have what they need, and are just waiting for Apple to release iOS 6.1 before they release iOS 6 untethered jailbreak for iPhone 5, iPad mini and all other devices to public.

France based Pod2g and legendary developer Planetbeing have been having regular back-and-forth conversations through Twitter and IRC discussing the progress of the jailbreak with significant progress being made in the last few days. The beginning of the week brought the news that the duo had found two additional vulnerabilities in iOS 6 for jailbreak but lacked an initial code execution point for the jailbreak to be a viable public release. Yesterday, Planetbeing announced that there has been "tons of progress the last few days. I think the future is looking bright for jailbreaking".

That tweet was almost immediately followed up with a post from Pod2g almost begging Apple to release iOS 6.1, leading us to believe that the necessary components are in place for a jailbreak release when 6.1 goes public. If that is the case then we would need to hope that no vulnerabilities are patched when 6.1 does go live.

Cydia running on iPhone 5 Jailbreak
Of course, there is still no official ETA yet. We will need to exercise a little more patience, which shouldn’t be a problem considering the timescales involved in the production of this jailbreak. It’ll be interesting to see if we are given the luxury of any new jailbreak tools when it is eventually released, but in the meantime the Twitter based announcements do go to prove one thing: that the iOS 6 untethered jailbreak is most definitely ready, and is just waiting for Apple to release the final version of iOS 6.1.

Those of you on Pre-A5 devices such as the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4G can still tether-jailbreak using either Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze. For instructions, you can always follow our detailed jailbreak iOS 6 and jailbreak 6.0.1 guides posted on the site.
