Hi,

Currently have Vu+Solo2 on HD tv in the UK. Thinking of getting a 4k tv but would appreciate any advice. In particular:

1. If I download 4k films TPB, what's the easiest/cheapest way to play these on the tv? Can my Vu+Solo box play them? or would I need a new Amazon firestick?

2. Bearing in mind currently no UK broadcasts for 4k (and barely any on other sats) is there any advantage yet in buying a see Vu Solo 4k box?

thanks/Merry christmas

1. Why would you need a receiver to watch 4K movies on a 4K TV? All decent 4K TVs play them perfectly via USB, especially LG and Samsung 4K TVs play almost all formats without any issues. Besides, not even Vu Solo 4K can play 4K clips (except its own recordings and those that are in the same format) yet, let alone all other vu models.

2. Again, why would you need a 4K receiver to watch free UHD channels on a 4K TV that has its own tuner? There are 8 UHD channels in total on Astra 19.2 (6) and Hotbird 13.0 (2) and all of them are FTA except one that is being encrypted at nights. (I have a Vu Solo 4K, and can watch that encrypted content - it's just a fireplace!) ;)

As for the quality of 4K channels, it's really awesome.
That FunBox 4K channel on Hotbird is particularly brilliant.
So just get a good 4K TV and remember; to fully enjoy the UHD details, the bigger the better! :p

Thanks for that.

So are you saying the 4k tv's have a direct input for a satellite cable and can control a motorised dish to get 13E and 19E? So I don't need a sat receiver at all?

My dad seems to think there are two types of 4k Tv's, ones with tuners for "broadband 4k" and another type with tuners for "satellite 4k". Is there any truth in this or is he just confused? (That's why we were thinking we'd get a tv that is ready for broadband 4k so that we can get Netflix/BT Sport 4k, then use a satellite box to get sat channels.)

... also, as for the downloads, we currently download films etc to a NAS drive and then stream them using the network too the tv via a VU box. Using USB isn't a big problem but it's nice and tidy to have it connected via NAS.

As there is no 4K standard any purchase of a 4k TV is premature. Your new 4K TV might not be able to visualise tomorrows 4K programs. That is the reason the French magazine telesatellite advises its readers not to buy a 4K TV yet.

Exactly, unless you're not planning to run emulators on that tv to watch encrypted channels. There are few models that don't have a satellite tuner, but most of them do.

As for 'Broadband 4K tv', I don't think such a category exists. You can watch Netflix and other 4K online content with all UHD TVs afaik.
