Hopping on the Android Wagon
By Sutlej Soin

HTC started it all with the Dream. Now Samsung has gotten into the action with their first Android-powered mobile phone - the I7500. Samsung's decision to hop onto the Android bandwagon comes as no surprise. When this writer interviewed Ms. Younghee Lee, VP of Overseas Marketing in the Mobile Devices Division of Samsung, she had already commented that Samsung will be offering different operating systems this year.

And even before the Mobile World Congress, there were rumors that Samsung might be showing off their Android-powered handset at the show. But to the dismay of many, including yours truly, it was a no-show. Almost three months later, Samsung became the first company among the top three mobile manufacturers to launch an Android device, the I7500.

Femme Fatale

If looks could kill, the I7500 would be a swashbuckling ninja warrior that gets all the women. At approximately 105 grams, the I7500 feels lighter than it actually weighs. Featuring a 3.2-inch AMOLED full capacitive touch screen, the phone also flaunts a pseudo brush metal finish at the bottom of the screen that hosts the standard navigation buttons plus the back, OK and menu buttons.

On the right hand side we have the camera capture and hold buttons and on the left hand side, rests the volume control buttons. The rear of the I7500 features a glossy black finish which is very prone to smudges as we quickly found out after handling it for a day. Lastly, the top of the handset has the microUSB charging slot and the 3.5mm earphone jack.

Feature-Full

The I7500 really takes the cake for having a complete set of features. For your multimedia needs, you get a 5-megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash. Also, with a 3.5mm earphone jack at your disposal, we are glad that there are no proprietary ports in place. Connectivity-wise, there is Bluetooth, GPS, HSDPA and Wi-Fi so you can stay connected all-the-time.

When it comes to battery life, you get a good capacity of 1500mAh which is enough juice to be able to last you for slightly more than a day judging from our previous tests. Lastly, when it comes to memory storage, the I7500 comes packed to the bone with a built-in capacity of 8GB. Too bad that its microSD slot is situated under the battery cover, causing it to be not hot-swappable in our books.

Concluding Thoughts

The I7500 is definitely a show stopper in terms of its looks and specifications. Though we can't comment on its responsiveness or its battery life performance due to the fact that we are holding onto a prototype unit, we like what we have seen thus far. Available in the third quarter of this year, the I7500 presents a nice alternative to the HTC Dream released a few months back and the HTC Magic which will be out in early June.
