Hello, I have both Nvidia Shield Pro and Apple TV 4K and I can say that for watching feeds in 4:2:2 the Apple TV 4K is much, much better
What model (which generation) of Apple TV do you have?

using an old second gen apple tv 4k. currently a feed on 19.2e 11650 v 9600

20 mbit so a decent test. streaming to vu+ tv app. Attached via short crossover cable. The apple Tv has 1 job and thats decode 4:2:2 so i have no need to connect it to a router. Just have to remember to set deinterlacing mode to yadif/linear/bob or which ever looks best for you, voila a descete solution for 4:2:2

When you say no need to connect it to a router, do you mean you connect the two boxes directly (therefore neither of them is connected to the internet)? Also, do the length and quality of the cable matter?

you need a cross over cable its just a modified ethernet cable. mine is short but its reliable over long distances if needed. straight out of the sat reciever into the appletv 4k. It disables the wifi on it though, well on my 2nd gen it does. if i need wifi i have to unplug the cable but i only use the apple tv 4k for 4:2:2 so not required.

Would it be correct to say 2nd Gen onwards with an ethernet port will do the job as long as its' 4k?
cant imagine the price being vastly diffrent, for secondhand, no need for a load of memory, apple gouge your eyes out for storage.

Thanks. What's the minimum spec of Apple TV box I would need?
mine is only 32gb 2nd gen. not sure if a first gen will do the job? get any 2nd/3gen you can for a price your happy with. just make sure its got an ethernet port. you can stream over wifi its just never gonna be as robust as ether.

What if I want to make full use of both boxes (including internet access)? Would a gigabit LAN switch or router be the solution or would they cause lagging/freezing?

lan will be fine, its got plenty of bandwidth. i went with the cross over option to avoid routing a cable to the router.

anyone found a solution using LG TV compatible apps (the non android version)?
Dose the Apple TV's built in media player play 4.2.2 natively or is a 3rd party app required ?

The problem is interfacing with the satellite receiver to select the desired satellite channel.
This is the reason for which the proper app in the AppleTV was suggested.
