I have been having a problem with Windows updates in Win 11 not downloading for several months. I got over the problem by manually installing any updates to keep my PC safe.
Yesterday, I did a windows' installation repair. It just installs an up-to-date version of windows over the current one and doesn't affect any files or apps that are installed.
All went well, but I still have the Windows update problem. I am probably going to have to do a fresh clean install. I was trying to avoid that.

Anyway, I find that since doing the repair, I now have another problem.
There is no longer any sound on MKV files when playing in Films & TV and Windows Media Player.
I didn't have this problem before doing the repair. I have followed various suggestions found by googling, but none of them has worked.
I know I can use other video players, but I would like to fix this issue if I can.

Does anyone have any ideas how I might fix this? It's driving me mad. :)

Part 1. Installing the Windows Media Player Codec Pack
In general, you may need to install a suitable codec pack to support more formats in Windows Media Player, as it doesn't work with the default settings. Considering that finding suitable codec packs isn't easy, I recommend downloading the Community Combined Codec Pack (abbreviated CCCP) directly.

This is a codec pack specifically designed to play MKV video files. Once installed, you can easily play MKV files using Windows Media Player or Media Player Classic.

Part 2. Using Windows Media Player Alternatives
If you don't want to install codec packs for Windows Media Player, or the codec pack doesn't work for any reason, you can try other media players. VLC is a good alternative. It's an open-source media player that works well across multiple platforms, and plays many formats, including MKV, AVI, MP4, FLV, WMV, and even discs.

Part 3. Convert MKV to a format supported by Windows Media Player
If you want to play MKV files on Windows Media Player, you can use software like Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate (Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate for Mac). The software is specifically designed for converting audio/video files, including converting MKV to formats compatible with Windows Media Player.

I have installed the K-Lite codec pack, which didn't fix it. I will look for and try the Community Combined Codec Pack.

The CCC didn't change anything, sadly.

I have now discovered that since the latest version of windows was released in December, last year, Films & TV and Windows Media Player no longer play Dolby Digital sound on MKV files.
If you already had the ability to play those files prior to the Windows 11 Version 24H2, it would continue working, but any new installs wouldn't. When I did the repair installation, it was obviously regarded as a new installation and I lost the ability to play MKV files with Dolby Digital sound.

So, I am thinking I need to find a win 11 installation files to allow me to just install an old version of win 11 which is prior to 24H2, if that is even possible.

I did find an app that supposedly enables the playing of Dolby Digital MKV files, but it didn't work. I will look at that again in case I did something wrong, but I don't think I did.

I have fixed my problem.

I didn't think it was possible, but I was allowed to 'go back' to a previous version of Windows 11 and I now have sound again.
Time will tell if I still have the Windows update problem, but I can manage that by doing manual updates, and Windows 12 can't be that far away.
