Tried using diskpart and hence clean on pc to clean ie wipe the drive followed by the various formatting options and sometimes none but whatever method I've tried the receiver fails to recognise any drive being there at all. Am I trying to light a candle in strong wind here or is there a method of installation that I've not followed. Thanks in advance for any knowledge/assistance.

all you need is just to connect HDD to back of box USB slot
the Front USB i found mostly fails to recognize any drive other than a USB Stick
then Menu- Disk Manager - Format Disk and okay

its waste of time trying to format with a PC/Laptop etc.. the formatting must be done via TM5402 M3 menu
if you did try on PC then do not select NTSC as this is not good box and S/W too old to recognize NTSC Format
Choose eXfat or Fat32 if you must format on PC at all .
then if HDD recognized on TM5402 M3 go ahead and format with above steps .
it works for me fine with my 4TB USB3.0 WD HDD : )
good luck !

Yeah, I've tried just to clear the disk using diskpart , select disk then clear but leave formatting alone and installed to rear but to no avail, fails to recognise any drive attached. Drive size I tried was 320gb. I could try a smaller one perhaps ?

Success! Well installed 2 drives no problem this time . Formatted both drives using the receiver however still formatted them to exfat before hand Nothing was done differently really, I will just put it down to a temperamental receiver. Thanks for help anyway barney115. About time I got a better receiver maybe a TM 5402 M4. Just skint at the moment!
