The first fruits of NBC Universal’s investment in Indian broadcaster NDTV are becoming apparent with NBCU planning to launch at least two of its channels in the sub-Continent.

Up for launch by the end of 2008 are the Sci-Fi and Universal Channels, according to local reports.

NBCU took 26% of NDTV back in January. The company also unveiled international expansion plans for its channels back in April 2007. On taking the stake in NDTV (which the company can increase to 50%), Jeff Zucker, NBC Universal’s CEO, said: "The Indian TV market is growing at 16 percent annually, which provides huge opportunities now and into the future."

NDTV is itself expanding, both domestically and internationally. The broadcaster has plans to offer its recently-launched Hindi general entertainment channel NDTV Imagine outside of India by next year, in territories including the UK and USA and the Middle East. A new lifestyle channel, NDTV Good Times, will also launch in India in the coming months, with international expansion for that service also planned.
