Barack and Michelle Obama paid tribute to Memphis soul in the latest version of "In Performance at the White House," 2013, which celebrates the city of Tennessee and brought blacks and whites together through music despite segregation and racism in the 1960s. Presentations included Sam Moore of Sam and Dave duo finalists of American Idol Season Edition 11 by "Soul Man", and Justin Timberlake and Cropper united in a version of Otis Redding "(Sittin 'On) The Dock of the Bay." Al Green was present, but withdrew at the last minute after suffering a back injury.

They took the stage Alabama Shakes, William Bell, Steve Cropper, Ben Harper, Queen Latifah, Cyndi Lauper, Joshua Ledet, Sam Moore, Charlie Musselwhite, Mavis Staples and Justin Timberlake. Booker T. Jones is the musical director and conductor.
