An Open Secret

At first there was the Chocolate, and then there was the Shine. More recently, LG proudly launched the long awaited KF750 Secret, a slider phone that is the South Korean giant's third offering in their popular Black Label series. As is the case with the exposure of any secret, the unveiling of the Secret at CommunicAsia 2008 was nothing short of a grand affair. Does the Secret live up to the hype, then?
Sleek & Stylish
The design of the Secret calls out strongly as a premium phone. With a mere 11.8mm depth, it is infused with high quality materials like carbon fiber, making it very light, and tempered glass which shields the LCD screen from scratches. All things considered, the Secret is a sophisticated yet sturdy device. The control buttons on the side aren’t flushed with its exterior, protruding by just the tiniest bit, making them incredibly easy to access in the darkness of a movie theatre.
The physical keypad is pretty much old hat for voice dialing and messaging, but the navigation buttons for scrolling through the menu have been replaced by touch sensitive buttons called Neon Touch Navigation buttons. When a button is pressed, a cool blue ripple effect is shown where your fingertip was, indicating its response to the touch. While all these effects are admittedly gimmicky, it does add to the overall appeal. If we had any gripes, it was that the buttons are slightly less responsive than we would have preferred, requiring the use of a little more force.
While the touch sensitive buttons provide an intuitive experience for the user, the main display becomes touch sensitive only when the Touch Media button is activated. Once pressed, the Touch Media menu props up, giving access to five multimedia functions: music, games, photos, documents and FM radio.
Secret Touches
With a built-in accelerometer, users can view images and videos vertically or horizontally on the screen by simply tilting the phone to the desired position; great when viewing landscape photos in the way they were shot. Happily, the accelerometer is not just for images, but also for games. For example, in an onboard fishing game, the user has to tilt his phone to cast the fishing rod to catch fish.
Despite its slim frame, the Secret packs a 5-megapixel camera, making it one of the thinnest 5-megapixel camera-phones in the market. Additionally, the Secret also houses a wealth of camera and video functions such as 120 frames-per-second video recording, DivX certified video playback and more. While the 5-megapixel sensor is top notch when given plenty of ambient light, the lack of a xenon flash does throw a spanner into its imaging works. Nevertheless, LG tries to make up for this by throwing in various photo and video editing functions, including an application called Morphing which does facial editing.
The Secret also includes Google Package which enables users to log onto their Gmail account, access Google Maps and watch YouTube videos. Additionally, the Secret also happens to be an excellent music player, thus allowing users to listen to music on their microSD cards through its built-in card reader.
Final Thoughts
All in all, the Secret is a very capable all-rounder, boasting not only good looks, but also excellent features and functionality. What makes the Secret so irresistible, however, is its price. At S$748, you'll be hard pressed to find another phone that offers as much as the Secret does, thus making it a very interesting preposition indeed.
