COLLIS SET FOR BRISTOL CITY MOVE

Goalkeeper Steve Collis is poised to join Bristol City on a deal for the rest of the season.

The 28-year-old has been a free agent since his contract with Crewe was terminated by mutual consent on New Year's Day.

Since then, Collis, who worked with City boss Gary Johnson at Yeovil between 2002 and 2006, has been training with the Ashton Gate club in the hope of securing a contract.

"Steve contacted us after leaving Crewe and asked if he could come training and he's been with us a few weeks now," Johnson told the club's official website.

"Not a lot of people are aware of his situation and he's sneaked under the radar to an extent.

"We've got ourselves a very good keeper and he will provide strong competition for Dean Gerken."

GRADEL WANTS OUT

Leicester midfielder Max Gradel has handed in a transfer request which could pave the way for him to make a permanent switch to Leeds.

The 22-year-old recently enjoyed a three-month spell with the League One outfit where he scored three goals in 14 appearances.

And it seems he is surplus to requirements at the Walkers Stadium after having made just one substitute appearance for the Foxes this season.

ARGYLE LAND STOCKDALE

Plymouth have signed Fulham goalkeeper David Stockdale on a month's loan.

Stockdale, 24, played in the behind-closed-doors fixture with the Pilgrims last week and caught the eye of the watching Argyle assistant coach John Carver.

The signing has been completed ahead of the Football League deadline for Saturday's match with Barnsley at Home Park, making Stockdale available for the visit of the Tykes.

NIGEL QUASHIE REJOINS RANGERS

QPR have completed the signing of midfielder Nigel Quashie following his release from West Ham.

The 31-year-old former Scotland international returns to Rangers, his first club, almost 12 years after leaving Loftus Road to join Nottingham Forest.

"It's great to be back home, and I am delighted to be at a club that I love to pieces," said Quashie, who has signed until the end of the season.

"I had a good time when I was here before, and the fans were very good to me. I'm a fan of the club myself so I know what they demand.

"There are some excellent players here and it is nice to come back and be a part of it.

"We've got a chance to get into the play-offs, and if we can do that and then get into the Premier League, the whole place will just take off."

BOTHROYD RUBBISHES SWANSEA LINK

Cardiff striker Jay Bothroyd has said that he is "embarrassed" at the news that fierce rivals Swansea had made an enquiry about him.

Swans chairman Huw Jenkins has confirmed that they had spoken to Bluebirds boss Dave Jones about the possibility of signing him but Cardiff's valuation of the player was too high.

Bothroyd told the club's official website: "You can kill that story off - I won't be going there. It's embarrassing. I'm happy at Cardiff."

Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale also confirmed: "On the basis that I have had no contact whatsoever with Swansea, I can only assume the call was made more out of mischief than with serious intent.

"However, to save them the trouble of making any more wasted calls, I can say that we have no intention of selling any of our players to Swansea."

LEICESTER CITY SIGN NOLBERTO SOLANO

Nolberto Solano has completed a move to Leicester City.

The Peruvian, who has made over 300 appearances in English football for Newcastle, Aston Villa and West Ham, has recently been on trial with the Foxes and trained with the first-team squad on Thursday.

Leicester are currently trying to obtain clearance to allow Solano to play in the FA Cup at Cardiff this weekend but, if he does miss out, he is likely to be available to face former club Newcastle in the Coca-Cola Championship clash at the Walkers Stadium on January 30.

TYKES' PLYMOUTH TRIP OFF AGAIN

Plymouth's Championship clash with Barnsley has been postponed because of a waterlogged pitch at Home Park.

It is the third time the fixture has been called off as the original match was controversially stopped after 58 minutes when Barnsley were winning 4-1.

The game was then rescheduled for 12 January, only to be shelved as Plymouth's FA Cup replay with Newcastle was rearranged for the following day.

WARNOCK CONFIRMS MACKIE INTEREST

Neil Warnock has confirmed he is considering a bid to bring Plymouth striker Jamie Mackie to QPR.

He told The Herald: "He's one of a number of players we are looking at. Other than that, I haven't got anything else to say on the subject."

Mackie scored eight goals for Plymouth this season, but is expected to leave Home Park in the summer following the club's relegation from the Championship.

He joined the Pilgrims from Exeter in January 2008 and has scored 16 goals in 102 appearances for the club.

JONES WANTS TO SWELL NATIONAL PRIDE

Dave Jones hopes he has given the Welsh people an even stronger sense of pride having guided Cardiff to within 90 minutes of becoming the first team from outside England to compete in the Barclays Premier League.

The Bluebirds will meet Blackpool in the Coca-Cola Championship final at Wembley on May 22 after triumphing 4-3 on penalties in a rollercoaster semi-final second leg against Leicester on Wednesday night which finished 3-3 on aggregate after extra time.

In the build-up to the encounter Jones admitted promotion to the top flight would be "life-changing for everybody in south Wales", not just the capital city club as they battle to rid themselves of debt.

Cardiff last competed among England's elite back in 1962, while fierce local rivals Swansea did so in 1983, and Jones knows how much promotion would mean to a country considered by many as traditionally rugby mad.

He said: "You saw the response at the end from these fans.

"The Welsh are very proud people and I hope I've given them something to be even more proud about.

"This club has come a long way but we've still got a long, long way to go.

"I'm proud to be manager here and I appreciate everything that has gone on. The fans made it a special occasion for us."

Welsh pride was aplenty prior to kick-off with national flags on show around an electric Cardiff City Stadium, the country's mother tongue reverberating through song around the ground and over the tannoy system and soldiers from The Royal Welsh regiment and HMS Richmond parading on the pitch.

But it is easy to forget Cardiff are no small club and this will be their third trip to the revamped Wembley in the last two years having enjoyed an FA Cup semi-final and final back in 2008.

It promises to be an exciting finale for chairman Peter Ridsdale who will step down at the end of the month following the confirmation of investment from the Far East.

Consortium frontman Dato Chan Tien Ghee was in tears after the final whistle and Jones knows, while they are not in the promised land just yet, it could be the continuation of something special for the Bluebirds.

"My first two years at this football club were about survival and then the next three years have been about progression," he said.

"You've seen the new stadium, you see the training facilities, you see everything that we've been trying to achieve and we've done that with all the problems off the field.

"Sometimes it's been difficult but we've just dug deep.

"I think everybody in this football club deserves a slap on the back."

In contrast, Leicester manager Nigel Pearson was left to reflect on a night of disappointment but a season of success having come so close just 12 months after promotion from League One.

The Foxes showed strong desire and spirit to fight back, and while Pearson refused to be drawn on Yann Kermorgant's costly dinked spot-kick in the shootout, he admitted change is forthcoming at the Walkers Stadium this summer.

"There's going to be a lot of changes because we've got a number of loan players, if we're going to progress we're going to have to develop the side again," he stressed.

"But right now, I don't want to talk about too far ahead. I'll let the dust settle first."

He added: "We've certainly had our critics this season, we've had plenty of people knocking us but throughout it all, as a group, they've been exceptional. I'm very proud to be their manager.

"I'll reflect on the bigger picture, we've made great strides this year. And for it to come to a penalty shootout is a pretty tough one."

ROYALS CLOSE IN ON GRIFFIN

Reading boss Brian McDermott is on the verge of completing his second summer signing with Stoke right-back Andy Griffin set to move to the Madejski Stadium.

The 31-year-old impressed during a four-month loan spell at the Royals this season and McDermott is hoping to secure his services on a full-time basis.

"We are talking to Andy Griffin and Stoke," he told the Reading Chronicle. "We'd really like to do something on that one if we can and we'll see what happens.

"All I'll say is Andy is very, very important to us."

PALACE DEAL CLOSE

Crystal Palace's administrator Brendan Guilfoyle says he is close to selling the club.

The Eagles were docked 10 points for entering administration this season and had to wait until the final day - when they claimed a 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday - to secure their survival.

The future is starting to look brighter for the London club following talks with the CPFC 2010 consortium, who are believed to have put in a formal offer for Selhurst Park ahead of a possible takeover.

Guilfoyle, who will meet with the club's creditors on Monday, told the Croydon Advertiser: "I'm hoping I can get a sale agreement in place by the time of the meeting on Monday, then I can draw up my CVA (company voluntary agreement) after that."

WHITTINGHAM HOPES TO FEATURE

Peter Whittingham is confident he will recover from a groin strain in time to be fit for Cardiff's Championship play-off final against Blackpool.

The Bluebirds' top scorer suffered the injury during Wednesday's second leg of the dramatic semi-final success over Leicester at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Whittingham was replaced just before the end of normal time after his penalty had earlier ensured the thrilling tie went to extra-time.

He is now battling to be fit for the Wembley showdown with Blackpool on May 22, but is optimistic he will be ready to aid Cardiff's bid for a place in the Premier League.

"I'm confident I'll be fit for the final," Whittingham told the club's official website.

"I'll be with the physios for a few days, but we've got 10 days before the final and hopefully it will all be fine. The physios are always brilliant and I'm sure it will be fine.

"I just felt my groin. I should be alright and it was just precaution to take me off.

"We didn't really want to be carrying anyone in a predicament like that, heading into extra-time, and the gaffer made the decision which I think is fair enough.

"I knew it was hurting and you do what is best for the team. I thought that I couldn't give 100 per cent and I came off."

PEARSON UNSURE OF FOXES FUTURE

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson says he can not make any promises about his future at the Walkers Stadium.

The Foxes saw their hopes of playing in the Premier League next term come to an end on Wednesday, when they lost their play-off clash with Cardiff City.

Even before their heartbreaking defeat, Pearson had already begun making plans for pre-season and the next campaign.

However, Pearson has just one year remaining on his current contract and has still to agree a new deal at the club.

He says contract negotiations are now up to City and chairman Milan Mandaric - the same people he believes can determine whether the Foxes build on their recent success.

"I can't give anyone any assurances because, as I have said before, managers get sacked all the time," he told the Leicester Mercury.

"The ball is in the court of the club now and has been for some time. All those sorts of things (budget talks) at this moment in time are private. I don't want to discuss targets for next season.

"The ball is very much in the club's court in terms of the next stage. We will see how things develop."

Leicester have their fair share of squad rebuilding to do over the summer after a number of key loanees from last season headed back to their parent clubs.

Pearson will now have to fill the gaps left by Martyn Waghorn, James Vaughan, Jay Spearing, Alex Bruce and Ryan McGivern and he knows he has his work cut out.

"There are going to be a lot of changes, because we have a number of loan players," he said.

"We will have to, if we are to progress, develop the side again. We will let the dust settle now and move on.

"We may need to make changes to the playing staff, as I suppose we did when we first came in, because you have to have players who are ready for the next challenge."

SPEED SEEKS TO SOLVE INJURIES Leicester v Sheff. Utd.

Sheffield United manager Gary Speed has ordered a complete review of the club's training practices after another of his players fell victim to a hamstring injury.

Andy Reid, on loan from Sunderland, was hoping to make his home debut for the Blades in Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Ipswich, but sustained a hamstring problem during his preparation and was forced to withdraw from the squad.

Speed said: "It's only a slight problem. Andy hasn't torn his hamstring. But while it certainly is bad luck, we've also been suffering far too many hamstring injuries for my liking of late and that's something we've got to examine.

"We'll be taking a look at everything we do during training and before and after games with the physios and fitness staff to see if there's something we can change.

"Hopefully Andy will be back soon. We'll just have to wait and see."

SMITH NOT SURE ABOUT RECEPTION

QPR winger Tommy Smith is unsure how his return to Portsmouth will be greeted by the home fans when his npower Championship-leading QPR side travel to Portman Road on Tuesday night.

Smith was one of a number of players who left Portsmouth following their relegation from the Barclays Premier League as they attempted to relieve the financial pressure on the club.

Since then both Portsmouth and Smith have enjoyed brighter times, with the south-coast club moving out of administration after finding the investment to secure their long-term future.

Smith, meanwhile, has been a part of the QPR team that has set the early pace in the Championship, with the 30-year-old scoring for the first time as they returned to the top of the table with a 3-1 win over Reading at the weekend.

"I really have no idea what reception I'll get at Pompey," he told the Fulham and Hammersmith Chronicle.

"It wasn't just me wanting to go in the summer - the club were looking to sell three or four players as well as me.

"And I was glad to come to a stable club - but on the other hand it was tough to leave Portsmouth in that position."

Victory for QPR would move them four points clear at the top, with closest rivals Cardiff not in action until Wednesday night when they travel to Reading.

MILLER EYES LOAN MOVE FROM BAGGIES

West Brom striker Ishmael Miller believes he may need to go out on loan to gain match sharpness after a three-month lay-off with a torn thigh muscle.

The former Manchester City player has been linked with temporary moves to Leicester and Ipswich since returning to fitness.

Miller faces stiff competition from Peter Odemwingie, Marc-Antoine Fortune and Roman Bednar with head coach Roberto Di Matteo generally favouring only one out-and-out striker.

He believes he will reap the benefits long term by going out on loan and playing regular first team football.

Miller said: "It's my view that I need to go somewhere just to get some football and play some games on the trot so that I can be ready for West Brom.

"I know it's going to be really tough for me to play unless I am fully fit.

"A few clubs have been suggested and the main thing for me is to get fit in training and, if I need to go out on loan, to get match fit, so be it."

Miller has been dogged by injury problems for the past two seasons.

He was out for more than 12 months after a serious knee injury and then suffered the thigh muscle setback in pre-season training.

BULLARD HOPEFUL OF RETURN

Hull's Jimmy Bullard is crossing his fingers he can return to action in two weeks' time.

The former Fulham playmaker has not featured for the Tigers since injuring his knee back in October.

His return was then hindered by a meniscus tear, although Bullard is set to return to training - giving Nigel Pearson's side a much-needed boost.

Bullard hopes that he can train injury free in the coming weeks, thus avoiding surgery, and be in a position to help Hull climb the Championship ladder.

"For three years I've been beset by injuries, which has been a bit of a killer," he told Sky Sports News.

"Hopefully in the next two weeks I'm getting fit and I'll be able to play and play the game that I love playing.

"I got a little nick in my meniscus. Hopefully if I get two weeks under my belt and hopefully that heals up I won't need surgery and we'll go from there."

CHOPRA EXPLORES INDIA OPTIONS

Cardiff striker Michael Chopra is in Dubai exploring the possibility of playing for India's national team.

The 26-year-old former Sunderland man held talks with India coach Bob Houghton before watching their international friendly against Kuwait in Abu Dhabi on Sunday - a game which they lost 9-1.

Newcastle-born Chopra has strong Asian roots within his family and qualifies under FIFA rules courtesy of his Indian-born grandparents.

But there remains difficult red tape around the venture in that domestic regulations in India mean only players who possess an Indian passport are allowed to represent their country, something he does not have.

However, the talks are merely tentative at this early stage and there remains a lot of ground work to do should Chopra, who has represented England up until Under-21 level, wish to play for the nation ranked 144th in the world.

Should he do so then it could cause problems for Cardiff with the Asian Cup on the horizon in January, which would potentially rule the influential striker out of a number of npower Championship matches.

India face United Arab Emirates in Dubai on Thursday but Chopra will be back in south Wales by that stage preparing for Cardiff's home clash against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

BECCHIO EYES NEW LEEDS DEAL

Leeds United striker Luciano Becchio has confirmed he wants to sign a new contract and extend his time at Elland Road.

The 26-year-old Argentinian has become a fans' favourite following his arrival in 2008 after proving his worth following an impressive trial.

Becchio has maintained his fine scoring record in the Championship this season after two years plundering goals in League One with Leeds.

He scored his first-ever hat-trick for Leeds on Saturday after coming off the bench to inspire a 3-1 success over Bristol City.

Becchio has been linked with moves to Hull City and Stoke, but he has now revealed that he is happy at Leeds and wants to sign extended terms.

The former Boca Juniors youngster was in the same side as Carlos Tevez and hopes to help Leeds win promotion again so he can line up against his good friend.

"I want to stay here. I want to live here," confirmed Becchio. "My agent has spoken with Leeds and I am ready to sign a new contract.

"Of course I see Leeds going into the Premier League and I want to be part of that. I would like to play with Leeds against Carlos Tevez.

"Tevez was my friend when we were young together with Boca. He is a great player and he is going well for Manchester City."

LEEDS HAND TRIALS TO PAIR

Leeds have confirmed that youngsters Leonardi Poggi and Shaun Greenfield are having trials at the club this week.

Poggi is a 19-year-old centre-half who plays for Bologna while Greenfield is a USA Under-20 international who came through Atletico Madrid's youth system.

Poggi, a left-footed defender, is on loan at Bologna from Cesena and contracted to the club until next summer.

Greenfield is an exciting all-action midfielder who can also operate in attack and he is relishing his opportunity to train at Thorp Arch.

"My thought on this, besides being very excited about the interest from a club with a tradition like Leeds, is that I'm very ready," he told Yanks Abroad.

"I have worked hard every week waiting for the opportunity and since my passport is still in process, it is not easy to get chances."

Leeds' scouting network has thrived in recent seasons having signed the likes of Luciano Becchio, Davide Somma and Mike Grella after successful trials.
