Hungarian DTT edges closer

DVB WORLD 2008, BUDAPEST: Ilkidó Sarkady, the Hungarian government commissioner for audiovisual media, has expressed her hope that Hungary will finally see the launch of a DTT platform later this year. This follows a decision by a parliamentary commission earlier this week to approve a timetable for the transition to digital broadcasting, the result of which should see a tender for licences start “in a few weeks time.” Sarkady emphasised that the rare political consensus that has been displayed in the Hungarian parliament to ensure the transition to digital broadcasting goes smoothly has been underpinned by an acceptance that it should be accompanied by a new Media Act.
