The Channel Island now has access to 1Gbps speeds on a trial basis.
Jersey Telecom has claimed its new fibre optic broadband service offers the fastest home connection available anywhere in the world but South Korea.

Residents of St Helier's new Castle Quay development are the first people on the island to be able to sign up for the internet service provider's (ISP's) up to 1Gbps download speeds package, reports BBC News.

Chief executive of Jersey Telecom Graeme Millar insisted only people in the Asia Pacific nation are able to access similar home broadband speeds, adding: "We don't think anyone else is doing this at the moment."

Mr Miller claimed one of the toughest aspects of the super-fast broadband rollout has been demonstrating the speed offered by the service, as the company has been unable to find any commercial sites with "a gigabit link that people can use".

The new proposition is 20 times faster than the ISP's up to 20Mbps package, which it claimed will be available to more than 25 per cent of households on the island by the end of 2010
