Deciding that she's waited long enough, and encouraged by her Irish father, who reminds her of the tradition of women proposing to their beloved on the 29th of February, she hops on a plane to Ireland. However, the Emerald Isle's weather defeats even her steely determination and forces the flight to land on the other side of the country from the capital. Now she has limited time to get to Dublin, a long way to go and a pub-owner-cum-taxi driver, Declan, who, though handsome, is a little too testy for her liking. But as the pair make their slow way towards her goal, they gradually begin to view each other differently... Edited for content.

This intriguing low-budget Italian sci-fi mystery tells the story of a translator who is given a very unusual assignment. Gaia makes her living translating Chinese into Italian. As soon as the assignment begins it's apparent that she's now facilitating a harsh interrogation rather than an interview. Cave of Forgotten Dreams (Documentary) U certificate
Werner Herzog's award-winning documentary about the Chauvet Cave. Situated among the beautiful gorges of the south of France, the cave is famous for its extraordinary prehistoric paintings. In a way, the film is a documentary about documentary, as, in addition to revealing the splendour of the Paleolithic artwork that was discovered within the cave system in 1994, it also probes why mankind has had, and acted upon, a seemingly innate urge to record everyday life for at least the past 32,000 years. In English, and German and French with English subtitles.

The City of Ember was built 200 years before as a subterranean refuge for humanity from some unspecified threat. But now the generator that lights the city is breaking down, and the city is starting to fall apart. Youngsters Lina and Doon are unconvinced by the assurances of the smug, incompetent mayor. When Lina finds some long-lost information from the city's builders, she and Doon decide to stave off the beckoning darkness. But can they manage it before the lights go out for the last time? The dystopian world is imaginatively realised, reminiscent of work by Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton and Fritz Lang. An impressive cast includes Tim Robbins as Doon's inventor father, as well as Toby Jones, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Martin Landau, Liz Smith and Mackenzie Crook.

Throne of Blood (Film) Film icon 4 star rating PG certificate
Akira Kurosawa's classic drama is an atmospheric, pared-down reworking of Shakespeare's Macbeth, set in the feudal Japan of the Middle Ages. Toshiro Mifune stars as Taketoki Washizu, a distinguished warrior who, in an encounter with a mysterious woman in a woodland glade, learns that he is fated for glory and power, but his rise to the top will be fleeting. He's subsequently goaded by his ambitious wife Lady Asaji Washizu into fulfilling the prophecy by becoming lord of the lofty, cloud-shrouded castle that dominates the landscape. It's a tale of ruthless assassination, and not only for those who block his path. In addition to being another example of Kurosawa's innovation and mastery of the medium, Throne of Blood was also said to have been American poet TS Eliot's favourite film. First play on Film4.

Marley and Me (Film) Film icon 4 star rating PG certificate
The Devil Wears Prada director David Frankel's light comedy-drama - based on a best-selling autobiography - stars Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston as two journalists who welcome an unruly dog into their lives. Relocating to Florida, newly-weds John and Jenny Grogan end up working for rival newspapers, with Jenny landing the more high-profile job. When she starts to get broody, one of John's colleagues suggests they see how they cope with a puppy before trying for a baby, so John picks a cute yellow Labrador retriever, Marley, as a gift for Jenny. Marley is a double-edged sword: he's an untrainably anarchic source of destruction; but he also gives John the material for a wry newspaper column, which improves his standing and the paper's circulation figures. The film follows the Grogans' marriage, through good times and bad, with Marley providing comic relief, and the leads turning in convincing, heart-warming performances.

The Big Blockade (Film) Film icon U certificate
This World War II propaganda piece marked the directorial debut of Charles Frend and tells, through interweaving strands, the tale of Britain's blockade of Axis powers and its effects on Germany's economy and morale. Produced by the Ealing Studios for the Ministry of Information, it was originally intended as a two-reel documentary dramatising the work of the Ministry of Economic Warfare. However, Ealing co-funded the film and built it up to feature length, incorporating fictionalised material alongside the documentary footage. The strong cast of British actors includes Michael Redgrave, John Mills, Michael Rennie and Will Hay. Alfred Drayton and Robert Morley appear as somewhat improbable Nazis, in roles that, given its period and the film's brief, are inevitably caricatured. The commentary was spoken by Frank Owen, who was then editor of the Evening Standard.

Hunger (Film) Film icon 4 star rating 15 certificate
Director Steve McQueen's Film4-funded award-winning drama focuses on the 1981 hunger strikes by Republican prisoners in Northern Ireland. Michael Fassbender plays Bobby Sands, one of a group of prisoners who first 'took to the blanket' with a 'dirty protest' in pursuit of their claims for recognition as political prisoners. Sands then became the first one of the group to embark on a hunger strike, which would ultimately end in his death. McQueen's film captures the reek of the urine-flooded, excrement-smeared cells, the intransigence of both sides and, at centre of the film, uses a bravura extended dialogue between Sands and Father Moran to question whether the strike and its resultant deaths would have any effect at all.
Director: Steve McQueen II
