BT generates £527m for Scottish economy, study finds

The telecoms giant's impact on employment north of the border is equivalent to the entire accounting and book-keeping industry.
BT generated more than half a billion pounds for the Scottish economy in the 2009-10 financial year, according to a new report from DTZ Consulting.

The study found the overall financial benefit of the broadband, digital TV and home phone provider's various activities stood at £527 million over the 12-month period.

It supports more than 12,000 jobs north of the border through direct staffing and spending on contractors and suppliers, putting the company level with Scotland's entire accounting and book-keeping sector in terms of employment.

Director of BT Scotland Brendan Dick said the firm's workers have a "genuine desire" to have a positive impact on communities across the country.

"BT contributes some very big numbers to Scotland's bottom line," he added. "These latest figures confirm the unique and vital role the company plays in the prosperity and wellbeing of the nation."

Scots currently have the chance to bring BT's fibre optic broadband service to their areas by voting in the Race to Infinity, which Mr Dick has described as a "golden opportunity" for the country
