Big majority of children want mobile TV

Mobile television looks set to become extremely popular with children, but it will not replace traditional TV viewing in their range of interests, claims a new study from marketing company Quaestor.

According to the survey of more than 300 respondents aged between 10 and 12 years old, 87% of children want to be able to watch TV on their mobile ha***ets, while 91% said they were eager to watch mobile television while travelling.

The Quaestor report also found that youngsters want the same range of channels on their phones as they find on their TV sets at home, and they want access to all their favourite programmes—particularly soap operas and reality shows such as Big Brother, so that they won't feel left out of peer group conversations.

Survey results also showed that 72% of respondents were keen to watch cartoons on their mobiles, while 62% wanted pop videos.

Quaestor research manager Shazia Ali highlighted the fact that children express a strong emotional attachment to their mobile phones because they are seen to give users independence and security.

She continued: "The key watchwords in mobile TV usage among children are convenience and choice. Current viewing patterns reflect children's desire for short and snappy, humorous content which can be shared with others."

Ali added: "It's clear from our research that mobile TV is the next big thing that children will adopt and add to the repertoire of technologies they already use. However, it will not replace traditional TV viewing, just as listening to music via mobiles has not replaced MP3 players but rather provided another channel through which to enjoy it".
