The BBC’s Future Media division has been forced to issue a fix to its BBC iPlayer after hackers were able to gain unrestricted access to the internet-delivered download service.

The hack made it possible for programmes to be downloaded to a PC without any of the Digital Rights Management. Normally, new shows are withdrawn from the iPlayer after seven days, and the programmes are no longer viewable after 31 days.

“We’ve released a fix to prevent unrestricted downloading of streamed TV programmes on BBC iPlayer,” said a BBC spokeswoman in a statement released to Broadband TV News. “Like other broadcasters, the security of rights-protected content online is an issue we take very seriously. It’s an ongoing, constant process and one which we will continue to monitor.”
In the seven weeks following the iPlayer’s Christmas Day launch, 17 million programmes have either been streamed or downloaded.
