'24': Back From The Dead

Although it's like a Panorama documentary compared to Prison Break, the mighty 24 has been prone to some very dodgy plot contrivances of late. As if the miraculous but welcome resurrection of Tony Almeida wasn't enough, there's been news of another past character clambering out from six feet under in order to make a return. (Click here to find out the identity). Consequently, here's a look at which supposed 24 stiffs might be next in line to step back into the fray…

George Mason

The CTU legend had a fairly rough time of things in Day Two, being exposed to a lethal level of plutonium, finding bits of his body falling off, and all before blasting into smithereens by a nuclear bomb. Listen up John McClane from Die Hard - that constitutes a bad day! Mason's final moments were in a small plane loaded with the bomb, which he deliberately crashed into the Mojave Desert to ensure it didn't detonate anywhere near an area of dense population.

How to bring him back: Remember how Jack Bauer was originally piloting the plane before George Mason emerged from hiding at the back of the cockpit? Well, how on earth did Mason manage to suppress all the frequent wheezing and coughing that had blighted his existence since the plutonium exposure? The answer lies in the fact that his twin brother Jason, who has a bad skin condition, did a covert swap with George prior to boarding the plane. Brotherly love and all that. George has since found a miracle cure and has been living it large in Hawaii.

Nina Myers

As Austin Powers memorably said to Fred Savage - "Mooooole. Moley, moley mole!" The treacherous Nina Myers did well to survive the wrath of Bauer throughout Day Two, but was shot repeatedly in the body by her revenge-fuelled former lover during the following season. The last we saw of her was her lying on her back with her eyes wide open, motionless.

How to bring her back: Erm, bulletproof vest and more cunning use of blood capsules than an English rugby player? So what if her eyes were gawping wide open and staring straight ahead - didn't anybody see Robbie Williams on The X Factor recently? Nina was so good at deceiving everyone, so playing dead would be a doddle to her.

Ryan Chappelle

The slimy government bureaucrat was given some redemption in the final moments of his life - by agreeing to let Jack shoot him in the head at point blank range during Day Three. This wasn't a means of keeping Bauer's trigger finger supple, but instead a desperate measure to appease terrorist Stephen Saunders and prevent him from releasing a deadly virus.

How to bring him back: It transpires that Bauer was in cahoots with his former colleague Saunders all along, with Chappelle only grazed with the bullet in a similar way to Renee Walker's fake death in Day Seven.

David Palmer

The poor president was killed off at the start of Day Five when a hired gunman put a bullet in his neck. It was a cruel and shocking end for such an iconic figure, whose warmth and humanity had risen above the barbarism elsewhere in the show.

How to bring him back: Remember the film JFK? There was the whole 'magic bullet' theory about how the cartridge that killed Kennedy ricocheted around his head - hence the strange entry and exit points. Well, lightening can strike twice. So the bullet that entered David Palmer's neck bounced around inside him like some entrail-strewn pinball machine and missed every vital organ and artery. His death was then faked, using a secret emergency protocol known by his close family and colleagues, in order to keep him from any further assassination attempts. He currently spends his time playing online Scrabble with his brother Wayne.

Carl Benton

Played by Robert Carlyle in 24: Redemption, Carl Benton was an old pal of Jack's who found himself in a tricky situation when he inadvertently placed his foot on a landmine in Sangala while fleeing from General Juma. He knew that if he moved his foot off the detonator, he'd go up in smoke. So Jack left him behind in a bid to take out a few of the pursuing enemy soldiers.

How to bring him back: We only heard the explosion. Brave Benton might have hacked off his leg ('it's just a flesh wound!') and managed to keep enough pressure on the landmine's trigger mechanism by weighting his detached limb down with a few nearby rocks. Using a bit of string from his pocket, he ties it onto the fleshy stump and hops off to a bush to hide. When Juma's men come nearby, he yanks on the string and pulls the leg off the landmine to explode it. Oh yes, then miraculously a Red Cross van turns up with plenty of blood supplies!

Teri Bauer

Jack Bauer's wife stomached a fatal bullet from the dreaded mole Nina Myers at the end of Day One, leaving lumps in the throats of shocked viewers around the globe and a huge chip on Jack's shoulder.

How to bring her back: Give Kiefer Sutherland a bit of Botox to knock off a few years and have Jack Bauer stepping out of the shower and into the arms of his beloved Teri. You see, everything was just a dream. Come on, they did it on Dallas!
